It is an honor to serve Schooner Cove Yacht Club as Commodore. I am grateful to have the opportunity to work with this talented, dedicated and turbo-charged Executive. We have 5 new directors joining the Executive this year, who will no doubt bring forward a new perspective and vitality. I trust that I will look back upon this time as a most rewarding experience.
These are exciting times as we witness the new structure emerging from the ground at 3521 Dolphin Drive. As you are all well aware, Schooner Cove and Fairwinds Marina are transitioning to a new look. The development of the cove area means that SCYC will have to adapt to a new reality which will necessitate some important decisions having to be made regarding the future direction of the Club. A committee has been formed to work with the developer, FW Enterprises Ltd., to help them to fully understand our needs, and to work towards arriving at a mutually beneficial solution that our members will be able to embrace.
Volunteering is a gratifying and worthwhile endeavour. It is the backbone of our organization and what makes SCYC the special club it is. We are a mix of sail boaters, power boaters, non-boaters, sailboat racers, and cruisers. It is heart-warming to see volunteers, from the entire mix of club members, supporting one another on water and land venues. With our dedicated core of volunteers, we ensure that all our club activities are always fun, inclusive and memorable. SCYC is becoming known as a club who understands how to put on a successful event. There is not enough space to thank our revolving core of volunteers by name, but please accept my sincere thanks for your dedication and hard work to consistently support SCYC’s activities. Please volunteer your time and experience to continue this legacy.
Our Yearbook publication is made possible because of the support from our sponsors. Please reciprocate by supporting their businesses, whenever possible. A big thank you to all our new and returning sponsors, your support is much appreciated.
In closing I would respectfully request that we all wear our name tags at our various functions throughout the year. In speaking with the new members, this was one of the items they found most helpful when integrating into the social fabric of our club. It immediately gave them a feeling of belonging. As one new member put it to me, “This is by far the best club we have ever joined.”
On behalf of your Executive, I extend to you our sincere wishes for a happy and safe boating season, rich in experiences and friendships.
