SCYC Members September Communication

I wanted to take the opportunity to communicate a summary of where we stand with regard to yacht club activities.  Unfortunately, the situation is such that we have had to cancel most of our social activities since February given the need to comply with public health orders and provincial sport guidelines for club sanctioned activities.

We have developed a Covid-19 Response Plan that is required as we seek to facilitate a return to safe boating related activities. It covers racing, facility access and events/meetings as well as some thoughts regarding personal boating. It will be communicated to members via the website and email and members are encouraged to read the executive summary. Under this framework we have been able to conduct some racing events and allow limited access to the Afterdeck.

Our Fleet Captain is also pursuing an expanded racing program for this fall. We have however decided to cancel the Fleet Regatta scheduled for September 27 given the required safety constraints on both sailing and shoreside activities. We simply cannot deliver the quality and type of program that we want our membership to have.  There will though be a race that day for those wishing to participate.

Despite the challenges we all face, many members have been out cruising and making the best of things…..and what great weather we have been experiencing.  Cruising stations are all being actively used and it is great that we can support those marinas given the challenges they have faced in staffing and operating.

We are exploring options on how we might best conduct our Annual General Meeting this November.  At that time, we will, at minimum, need to approve the new Executive slate and the budget for next year.

With regards to financial issues, our expenditures and revenues are reduced with cancellation of the Lasqueti Regattaand other social events. We have had some increased costs associated with filing legally required tax returns, moving the Afterdeck and completing roll-out of the new website.  More details will be provided in the run-up to the AGM along with a proposed budget for next year.

You will also soon receive a notice for dues for next year which are payable by October 15th.  We hope you will continue to support the club while we pursue finding ways to get back to a new normal for our programs.

Enjoy the rest of the boating season, stay safe and feel free to reach out to myself or any other members of the Executive to share your thoughts.
