10th Annual SCYC Fleet Regatta
Notice of Race – Fleet Regatta Sailboat Race September 12, 2021
The SCYC Fleet Regatta is a fun event for SCYC members. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Fleet Regatta and all SCYC skippers are encouraged to register their boats. The race will be followed by a “burger” social event at the Rocking Horse Pub. The cost of the meal will be $15 per person.
Only SCYC members’ boats are eligible to participate in the racing event. The format for the sailing event is a pursuit race, in which each boat will be given an individual start time based upon an assigned handicap. The fastest boats will receive the latest start times. The first boat will start racing at 11 am and all boats must complete the race by 3:30 pm.
The pursuit format removes the crowded start line and makes it less stressful for sailors. All boats will sail the complete course and, in theory, should finish at roughly the same time. The goal for the early starting boats is to maintain their lead while the later starting boats try to catch up to them.
The course will include several buoys and islands to be rounded. Details will be provided in the Sailing Instructions, which describe the conduct of the race and will be sent by email to all registered skippers.
All skippers are required to attend the Skippers’ Meeting at 10 am on Sunday, September 12th, at which the course, safety rules and other factors will be discussed.
Each skipper must register online for the race and provide their boat’s PHRF-BC handicap if they have one. If a boat does not have a current PHRF-BC handicap the skipper will indicate this and the Race Organizer (RO) or Principal Race Officer (PRO) will assign a handicap for this event. Allowances may be made for inexperienced skippers and/or crew.
Boats registering will be assigned to one of two Divisions, based on handicap.
The order in which boats cross the Finish Line reveals the winners. Prizes will be awarded at the post-race social. The overall winner, first across the line, will be awarded the SCYC Fleet Regatta Trophy. Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishes in each of the two divisions. Additional fun prizes will be given out.
Skippers are required to sign a disclaimer of liability and to provide a copy of their valid third-party insurance certificate showing minimum overage of $2,000,000.
Skippers are to provide a crew list, containing names, contact information, and an emergency contact for each crew member.
The race will be governed by this Notice of Race, the Sailing Instructions and the COLREGS (The International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea). All boats should monitor VHF Channel 72 continuously. The Racing Rules of Sailing do not apply for this event.
