RACE MANAGEMENT ONLINE TRAINING OPPORTUNITY

If you’ve ever wondered how to set a race course, what flags are used in the starting sequence, what to do if a boat is over the line early (especially if it’s your boat) and what you need to know when approaching a turning mark then we’ve got just the instruction you need. Whether you are a member of the race committee, a skipper, your boat’s tactician or crew, you’ll benefit from knowing more about how races are managed.

In smaller clubs like SCYC, individual skippers often take turns setting courses for traditional and rally-style races. Understanding important course setting principles such as course length and direction, safety, short course provisions, wind and current, timing, etc will make racing more fun and safer for everyone.

John Abel, Paul Evenden and John Culter will be presenting an online course through BC Sailing. The registration fee is $30 and includes a copy of the new 2021-2024 Racing Rules of Sailing book. The Club Race Officer course covers the duties of a Race Officer in charge of a race course, including organization, setting courses, starting, controlling events throughout the race, and finishing procedures.

The course will be held over 4 evenings, Feb 22 & 24 and Mar 1&3. If you want to know just the basics then participate in one or two of the February sessions.

John Abel is a really engaging presenter and many of you will recognize him from major regattas. I took the introductory course a few years ago and it was really worthwhile.  You’ll gain knowledge and confidence whether you’re setting the course or sailing it!
